Photographing Butterflies

Getting Started with Butterfly Photography

With their incredible colors and intricate patterns, butterflies are among the most beautiful photographic subjects. Naturally photogenic, these small creatures are also amazingly elusive, challenging even the most experienced photographers. While many species have been captured on film, several have never been photographed. Some of the butterflies in this book appear for the first time. Although photographing a living butterfly often requires more patience than catching and pinning it down for a collection, photography can be far more rewarding. Your picture provides a permanent record of both the butterfly and its natural habitat without harming the insect in the slightest. Moreover, a series of photographs can show various aspects of a single butterfly's behavior as well as important stages in its life-egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis.
