Butterfly Q & A

How long do butterflies live?

In general, most butterflies are extremely short-lived and survive in the wild for an average of about two weeks. There are, of course, numerous exceptions to this rule. Florida's state butterfly, the Zebra Longwing, is a perfect example. Adults of this butterfly may survive for 4-6 months. Still others, particularly species that migrate long distances and/or overwinter as adults, are capable of surviving for extended periods of time.
